The ACT OF BE-ING

Good acting is being. Simply, being human. The very best performances, the ones that truly reach into our hearts and touch our souls are basically just showing us the human experience. While auditioning actors for my recent film I wrote and directed, I was privy to being on the other side of the casting process. There were so so many good “actors” who were all performing. It’s what we all do, perform. However, when I came across someone who had digested the material and made it their own it became about simply BE-ING NOT DOING. I’m sure I have done this myself in auditions. This experience really made me see how much actors get in their own way, tense up and “perform”.

So how does one get to such raw, open performances though? By first allowing yourself to be seen. We all walk around with created personas- one we show to the world and the one we keep private. In order to truly immerse  yourself  in such great honest work it requires putting down that outward persona, conquering fears, facing the bad, and the good in ourselves and saying here I am any way. It is in that honesty we are able to give over to the material and simply BE. It’s the ability to be so private -publicly. It’s that vulnerability that is the very foundation of great actors. It’s my belief that what draws most artists to want to create in the first place is creating that connection of sharing the human experience. So we must learn to relax, do the work beforehand and then just BE.

In this workshop we begin to dismantle what holds you back from being truly present and fully seen. I will always mix in my 25 years of knowledge of the business of it all, auditioning, and quick tips to get to the meat of the material.

We’ll be working with exactly who you are, at whatever level, to ultimately connect to yourself and your work
