The ACT OF BE-ING
Let’s escape! Escape into art, into character, into words.
Good acting is being—simply, being human. When you watch great acting, you forget the world around you. You’re transported—into another world, another time. And when you’re the one acting, if you’re fully immersed, time stands still. You’re completely present. The very best performances, the ones that truly reach into our hearts and touch our souls, come from this: the art of being fully present. That moment of raw honesty, of simply being human.
After weeks of leading my book club–meets–writers group based on The Power of Now, I was reminded how deeply important the present moment is. The book states that the present is all we truly have. And it made me realize—this is true in every aspect of life, including art. Whether you’re an actor, writer, sculptor, or musician—any form of art requires presence. To bring your work to life, you must fully surrender to it.
While auditioning actors for my film Fresh Kills, I was on the other side of the casting process. I saw so many good “actors” performing, but few truly being. It became crystal clear: actors often get in their own way. They tense up, overthink, and try too hard to “perform.” Just as in life, we have a habit of blocking ourselves—overanalyzing, worrying, failing to truly listen. These patterns don’t serve us in life, and they certainly don’t serve us as artists.
To create raw, honest work, to silence the mind and its constant interference, you must first be willing to be fully present and seen. Dropping the persona, confronting your fears, embracing both the light and the dark within you—and standing in that truth anyway. That’s the work. That’s where transformation happens.
And this is not just for actors. Directors and writers—understanding the foundation of good acting is essential. It was imperative for me to make my film. Working with actors is a delicate, powerful journey—if you know how to get what’s needed from them.
I also encourage anyone looking to go deeper within themselves—artists, public speakers, creatives—to take this class. It helps you see how you show up in the world, and why.
As always, I meet students exactly where they are, at any level, guiding them to connect to the work and to themselves—through relaxation, Method-based exercises, and discussion.
We will be working from a monologue of your choice. I encourage you to pick something that lights you up—something you’ve always wanted to say but maybe never could. A character you’ve always wanted to embody. A truth you’ve been waiting to express. This is your chance to use a character’s voice to speak something real. I’ll also have recommendations, but I urge you to choose something that truly resonates with you, something that demands to be heard.

"Acting isn't something you do. Instead of doing it, it occurs. If you're going to start with logic, you might as well give up. You can have conscious preparation, but you have unconscious results."
Lee Strasberg
