“Escapism: Freedom Writing”

In one of my last classes, What’s Your Story? I gave students weekly writing prompts to help them uncover why they were writing their scripts, novels, whatever, and what they were truly trying to say through their words. In the final class, I posed this writing prompt: If you could leave right now, leave everything behind free and clear, what would you do, and where would you go? What a prompt, right? A prompt that allows your imagination to run wild, to escape into this unknown or secret desire we seldom allow any air. I was really excited to listen to what the students wrote …until I wasn’t.  Almost every response looked backward instead of forward detailing why they couldn’t leap into this imaginary place. It quite literally broke my heart.  Rather than embracing the chance to imagine a new beginning, students were held back by their past, their pain, their trauma, their conditioning, and the world that had been set before them. The door to the cage, which the world or you placed yourself in, had been sprung open but no one realized they could fly away.

This struck me deeply that I thought about it for weeks after the class ended. It made me reflect on how conditioned we are to live within the structures imposed on us, often frozen by fear and the expectations of others. This is where I shake you awake!

That’s why this next class is about escapism. Through crafted writing prompts, you’ll be challenged to let your imagination run wild. Messy, sexy, gorgeous, loud, raw, obnoxious, and ALIVE- that’s what we are after in this creative writing class. How many of you are struggling with your scripts, your novel, being stuck in your life- but can’t allow your imagination to roam is the reason many of you feel stuck!  I know- It’s harder than it seems because we’re so anchored by our fears and the frameworks we’ve been taught to live within. But that’s the beauty of art and writing—it can take you to places beyond what life is showing you!! Allow it to!

This class is not just about exploring a different side of yourself it’s about pushing the boundaries of your creativity!!  It’s a journey to freedom through imagination—for now- and a chance to truly see how far you can fly.
