UNDER THE WORDS

As humans, we don’t always say exactly what we mean. The past, the present, our fears, future hopes, and dreams long gone by, all dictate how we show up in the world. It dictates what we say and what we do not. The same holds true for your characters. Whether you’re writing them, directing them, or bringing them to life through acting. It’s the beauty and the complexity of being human that lies within the words, called the subtext.

I really couldn’t be more excited about this class!! After being with many of you for almost 2 years now- THIS is the class that’s needed MOST! For all of you who are new here- welcome. This class is truly a delicious deep dive for anyone who LOVES picking apart the human psyche.

I had a wonderful acting teacher who used to make us read psychology books that opened my mind. One might think that’s strange being that it was an acting class, but it was one of the most vital lessons in all my studies. This is where I begin to approach every character I come across- whether I’m playing them, writing them or even directing them. It is the basics and the very foundation from where all work begins. This a skill so VITAL to ANY artist- anyone really- who desires to understanding one another better. Come do a deep dive into the words, the world of the piece, and the story. Let’s see what is REALLY lying underneath those words.

What to expect-

  • Script Analysis, Scene Study, based on a film- TBD

  • Investigating the Script: Becoming a detective. Understanding how to pick apart, analyze, and become a detective on what the writer is really trying to convey.

  • Explore the themes: love, loss, trauma, redemption, healing, etc.

  • Reading Between the Lines: Examine the text for clues: What is explicitly stated? What is implied?

  • Identify the subtext in dialogue: What are the characters not saying but feeling?

  • To go deep within yourself to see where what you’ve learned by investigating the material sits with you.

  • Transition from script analysis to scene study. How to embody the characters based on the detective work done in the first two weeks.
